No, its purely fan service, they said as much in the inside the episode on HBO.
That's not how I understood it at all. He said they always planned to bring Gendry back, but not how to re-introduce him.

That's how I understood it too that they always planned to bring him back. I guess he will als be back in the books, so it's not fan service.

Maybe you're right, I hope so, always liked Gendry, but with so little time left in the series...

Show Gendry is a composite character though. Doesn't book Gendry just stay with the Brotherhood w/o Banners? I must confess my memory is a bit hazy there.

Yes, he's still a member of the Brotherhood. Right now he lives at the Crossroads Inn (where Hot Pie is in the show) and works there as a smith. Probably the thing I like the most about the show is the fact Gendry is so much more important to the overall plot. I'm 100% certain he's gonna smith some Valyrian steel or dragonglass in the future, that's the best way to utilize his character. Also, since Bella, Mya and Edric don't exist in the showverse, he's the last Baratheon, and while it may seem unimportant and useless, it would still be nice to see him get legitimized and continue the Baratheon bloodline (with Arya, perhaps? *wink wonk*)

I think that Gendry will get made a lord for supporting Jon and Danny, thus regardless that he's a Bastard, he can keep the Baratheon bloodline going, but under a new name. With Gendry's new status he is able to marry Arya, because he's one of a small number of people who can get through to her and help her save herself from herself.
I think Gendry & Arya will be more like war buddies (marriage isn't her thing). But I'd love to see him with Sansa.

There are three living smiths who know how to rework Valyrian steel. The finest of them was in Volantis. Came here to King's Landing at my invitation.
But of course, Mott would have already been in King's Landing. However, I believe EvenWind is thinking of the books where we do indeed have "Master Mott" named as the armorer who brought both swords to Tywin when Tyrion was present and the swords were first introduced to us.
Tywin isn't explicit as to when this happened. He was Hand for Aerys II for 20 years or so and could have invited the smith during that time - which would fit the story timeline just fine.
Why would Tywin spare the expense of bringing one of the three Valyrian smiths in the world all the way from Volantis before he had Valyrian steel to be reworked? Wasting money doesn't seem like his schtick.

It was a wedding gift for his grandson, the King, and also a huge trophy of defeat over the Starks. I can see every reason why Tywin would bear any expense to do it. The only way people would continue to respect the Lannisters with their depleted gold mines is if people still BELIEVED they were rich. Tywin didn't approve of the lavishness of Robert, no doubt, but he still knew the importance of appearing powerful.

The major question is the "when". If the smith was brought in early enough to train Gendry in the technique of working with Valyrian steel, you can easily imagine a story use for it. If the smith was brought in too late to train Gendry, then Gendry's return becomes something else entirely.

I don't see a happily ever after for Ayra. She's too far gone. She is not an evil character, but she has evil in her. I don't believe she will ever settle down and have children, live a happy life. That's not her.

I think it would be a nice closing of the circle to have a Stark marry a Baratheon, as it was planned all those years ago, but it will be Sansa if anyone, not Arya.
