Rhaegar's and Lyanna's Secret Marriage

Dear all,
I wonder if someone has ideas why Rhaegar and Lyanna kept their marriage a secret.
Especially that it could have stopped the war and rebellion.

I think probably because Lyanna was betrothed to Robert, so they may have been hoping to avoid the war that happened anyway...

It's barely a spoiler at all though, is it? We already know about the marriage, and have been shown enough via Bran's vision to infer who the bride was.

I haven't watched Episode 6 yet. I don't even watch previews and trailers.
