Have we gotten our annual "No, it won't be out this year" apologia yet from Martin?

Of course, expecting him to be prompt about it is a bit contradictory..... 8-)

I feel that we definitely won't get WOW until after the final season of GOT has come out, I sort of feel Martin has been holding off for this very reason.
Maybe they requested that he doesnt release them yet even though they may already be finished? As he's released 2 other books instead of WOW... The show has already said that they are doing their own adaptation of the ending but with Martin telling them the main plot points sooo... yeah, I think (hope lol) by the end of this year.

Quite the opposite: there were (by several accounts) people at HBO who were furious that Martin did not get the books out before the series was done. They had, after all, paid for the rights to the series: and GRRM essentially sold them a promise that he did not fulfill.

Even at this late point, the release of the penultimate book would have been a little bit of extra publicity. Sure, there would have been minor amounts of fans yelling about how much better the book is than what the show provided, but after Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings, the general public does not buy that anymore.

The "they" that must be really upset is Martin's publisher. If Winds and Dream had come out while the series was running, then the sales would have been spectacular. It would not quite have been Harry Potter: but it would have been the nearest thing that we've seen since then. Interest in the series will almost certainly wane drastically after this season, and that will be a lot of lost book sales.

Oh Wimsey, you're still alive! :D
I think GRRM told last year we could lock him up if 'Winds of Winter' didn't arrive this year.

heh, I suspect that it will sound like a Trump rally in 12 months, then!

Well, the conspiracy theorist who were convinced that Martin had the whole series completed and was holding on to them because he did not like the TV series have a bit of egg on their collective faces! (Not that they are aware of it, of course.) I suppose that there is the more realistic question of whether Martin is going to try to alter the way he ends it given the fairly negative reaction: but, then, after 5 books, it's probably much too late for that.

Other things have been in the news and I might have missed it, but I am assuming that Winds of Winter didn't come out last year and won't be coming out this year, either. Has GRRM given us our annual apology? (Or do we have to go 2019 World Series on him? 8-) )

Incidentally, we've learned that Rudy Guilliani must be one of those hardcore fans: he thinks that it's a documentary!

*blows dust off of thread*

So, I checked on Google first this time and, nope, Winds of Winter didn't come out last year (again). Has he given us the annual apology yet?

Let the dust gathering recommence.

It's the 2nd anniversary of Trump's failed coup, but (I think!) the 7th Anniversary of Martin's "I am not quite finished with Winds of Winter, so it won't be published before the TV series adaptation is shown" apology. I just checked on Amazon to make sure, and: Lo! It's STILL not available!

I remember the conspiracy theories that Martin had finished the series and was just waiting for the show to end to release the books. On the other hand, I remember other conspiracy theories that Martin had/has zero intentions of finishing the books. I don't do conspiracy theory (I hate religion and everything like it), but at least one of those conspiracies cannot be shown to be false!
